If you have kids, you know how fast they outgrow their clothes. You could buy them a shirt with their favorite character, only to find that it doesn't fit them a few months later. Those pants that survived the playground, still in great condition. And now they’re too big for them.
What you’re left with is a huge pile of kids clothes that are still in good condition but too small for wearing. And many people end up throwing away all these to clear the clutter in their wardrobe. But is there no other way of dealing with clothes your kids have outgrown? Well, as it turns out, there are a few!
Pass Them On
If you have multiple children or know someone with younger children, the clothes of your older kid can be passed on to the younger ones. This is a sustainable way of reusing clothing that's still in good condition instead of discarding it as waste.
Of course, not all pieces of clothing can be passed on as hand-me-downs because many are likely to have some wear and tear from playing— it happens! But, make sure to put away the ones that haven't been worn through, and you will be able to avoid spending a substantial amount on buying kid’s clothes in the future. If there is a gap of several years between your kids, ensure you store the outgrown clothes with care until the younger sibling is old enough to fit into them.
Pro tip! Store them in bags or bins labeled with the size on the outside so it’s easy to find later on!
Put It Up For Sale On Fashion Resale Markets
Did you know you can make money by selling clothing your kid has outgrown? Yes, that's right, there are several fashion resale marketplaces like Poshmark, ThredUp, and Kidizen, where you can list second-hand clothing that's still in new-like condition.
This is a good idea if you have a lot of new clothes lying around that your child can't wear anymore. Just put it up on any such website with a suitable description, and you may soon get a good offer from another parent interested in that piece of clothing. This is another small step towards sustainability.
Donate Them
If you have a substantial pile of old yet usable clothes, donating them to a charitable organization might be a good idea. You will be able to free some extra space in your wardrobe and help some needy children at the same time.
There are a lot of organizations out there that accept old clothes for distribution. Try getting in touch with such organizations near your place of residence, and drop in with a bag of clothes that can bring a smile to the face of the less fortunate.
Summing It All Up
These are just a few ideas you can do to repurpose pieces of clothing that your child has outgrown. Try them out to reduce your household waste and take a step towards sustainability simultaneously.
